At completion, the Campus Center Project will enhance the collegiate experience for students and present a focal point for the campus community. Recruitment and retention of students is vital in today's competitive higher education market, and studies show that two significant reasons students choose a university involve campus environment and a campus center. La Verne's Campus Center Project addresses both issues as well as providing needed classroom space and creating a "heart" of the campus.
The Sara & Michael Abraham Campus Center building will take its place adjacent to the recently completed Frank and Nadine Johnson Family Plaza. The classrooms, office space, cafe, mail room and conference rooms inside are just part of the vast new space that the structure will provide. The cafe, recreation space and quiet lounges will offer a familial, homelike appeal.
Since completion in 1973, the Super Tents have been the university's most recognizable campus feature, serving as both the student center and nexus for the university's outstanding athletic programs. The facility has been updated to meet the needs of the sports science department and the student-athletes. The Sports Science & Athletics Pavilion features new office and classroom space, new fitness facilities, seating expansion for the gymnasium, improved access with indoor elevators, and a third level. The remodeled Pavilion now utilizes day lighting, solar heating and natural ventilation to become a more energy-efficient facility.
The new, multi-level Plaza serves as an open, outdoor meeting place with various levels that offers both seating and performance areas. Students now have a venue for discussions, studying and re-energizing while also providing a place for outdoor events, classes or lectures. Located between the Abraham Campus Center and the Sports Science & Athletics Pavilion and adjacent to both Dailey Theatre and Ortmayer Stadium, it will serve as the crossroads of the campus now and in the future.
Completion of the Campus Center Project will enrich campus life for ULV students and strengthen the university's recruitment and retention position. It will also serve to inspire further campus improvements.
