Festivals

The ULV Theatre Department produces several theatre festivals each year, providing students with the opportunity to work in a tight schedule on several projects simultaneously. Theatre festivals typically include a bill of smaller, one-act plays that could perform in either of the theatres or in alternate locations such as classrooms or found spaces.

Spring Semester Mini-Festivals

Students in the Directing Studio I and II each present two one-act plays or performances, one for each of the March and May Mini-Festivals. The festivals usually perform Sunday through Wednesday, with each project performing at least twice. Students in the Introduction to Design for Stage & Studio course work in collaboration with the directing studetns to support the projects with scenic, lighting and costume design conception and realization.
All theatre majors are required to take Intro to Design in their freshman or sophomore year and Directing Studio I in their junior or senior year. Ambitious students or those interested in having an emphasis in directing may arrange to take directing earlier than their junior year.

High School Theatre Festival

For three days in late February, California and local area high school theatre programs come to ULV to perform 20-minute plays and presentations, receive adjudication and commentary from ULV faculty & students, and participate in workshops guided by ULV students and alumni. Awards are given at the end of each day recognizing excellence in acting, directing, writng, ensemble work, techical excellence and other areas.

January Interterm

January Interterm provides ULV students with an intensive study of theatre, either in the form of a class meeting four hours a day, five days a week, or through production work that meets as much as 8 hours a day for five days a week. January gives ULV students who take a theatre arts course a break from the regular semester of classes and a month of conservatory-like training and experience. January work can take the form of working on a specific production (Marat/Sade, by Peter Weiss in January 2004 or Little Shop of Horrors in January 2002,) of creating a collaborative work (Brecht-Fest with Weill, the poetry of Bertolt Brecht and music of Kurt Weill presented in a cabaret setting in January 2003,) or of studying a particular genre or area of theatre (Performance Art in January 2005.)

American College Theatre Festival

ULV Theatre regulary enters productions into the American College Theatre Festival. Shows entered in the festival receive commentary for the performers and crew by faculty members of regional area colleges and universities. As a result, ULV students may be nominated for Irene Ryan scholarship auditions or may become eligble for design, management or writing awards. Outstanding productions or scenes may be potentially selected to tour to the Region XVIII festival in early February.
